FIxing a date

Have now confirmed a date in March to come back to Alston and have another good look around. We will be viewing some houses and bringing the children to visit the school. Hopefully we will have our house on the market by then if we ever get a response from the builders who came out to give us quotes! I don't understand how these things can take so long - I thought we were in a recession!
Told Mum of our plans today and she was a little upset but on the whole very supportive which was nice. I expected her to go all quiet and sulky but she was very good and I am relieved.
Thought I might finish my scarf today but have measured it and I need to add at least another 3 balls of wall to it to make it long enough. Have luckily found a website that can supply it,
www.englishyarns.co.uk so I should have it finished soon, at least in time for next winter!!!

  1. Hi Irene, congratulations on starting your blog. I see you've found our Middle Cottage Diary blog. I look forward to reading about your progress on moving to Alston. We're about 7 miles from Alston, infact as i write, I'm looking out over Alston Moor, beyond which is Alston.

What made you decide on this area of the world to move to?

    All the best,

    Ed

  2. Hi Irene, welcome to the world of blogging!

I am new to it all too and Middle Cottage Diary is on version 3 I think but I like the way it looks now. I do most the posting but luckily Ed (above) is a bit of a techy and sorts out all the problems.

It is amazing around here today. Really cold but clear skies and it feels almost spring like. I am sure you will love it when you eventually move up here. There is a house for sale in our valley although not sure the broadband could cope with 2 people blogging!

Look forward to hearing how you get on.

  3. Thank you David and Ed. It is encouraging to hear from you. We fell in love with Cumbria/Northumberland after many visits to a NT cottage at Twice Brewed. We always felt so peaceful and calm whilst we were up there. With two little boys and one not so little boy (read as: husband!) we discovered the steam railway at Alston and have been frequent visitors to that area over the last 4 years or so. It just feels like a good time to go before the children attend senior school. We have seen a couple of houses that we like but will know more after our March visit!

Once again, thanks for the encouragement - I may be calling on you both for some local knowledge!

  4. and another welcome from me too -I am about 14 miles from alston. it is an amazing place - Nenthead might be a more reasonably priced place to look - and it is full of crafty alternative types - it is supposed to be on a ley line that links it up to Paris (can't remember where I heard that) it is not for the feint hearted though! COLD! but the people are WARM and you will have an adventure I am sure! renting is a good alternative while you get the lie of the land?
anyway - call on me if you need anything!

  5. Katie makes a good point, Nenthead is worth a look. We have a freind who lives there with small children and she loves it. Also renting might well be worth looking into for the short term. If you are coming up and want a guide (for all I know) then give me a shout. Even just to pop in for a cup of tea.

  6. Thanks guys. We know Nenthead reasonably well and it is on our list of possibilities. We have almost resigned ourselves to renting in the short term as things never go to plan. We will know more after our March visit. Our current house will be ready to go on the market in March so fingers crossed. It would be great to meet up for a cup of tea- it is a new start for all of us and we are all leaving friends behind. It is not so easy to make new friends when you are too old to knock and ask if someone is coming out to play! Will try and update my blog later on today - we have been so busy getting the house/garage/garden sorted and I have to pop and see a patient now. Once again, thanks for the warmth and friendliness - its part of the reason we want to move!
